Chances are, you haven’t yet seen Garden Café. And chances are, you might never see it, unless you live nearby or have friends who lived near it. Which would be a shame, because this new restaurant, opened late last year, has a lot of things going for it.

First, there’s the friendly greeting you’re likely to get when you walk through the front door. Nestled in a largely residential area, it has a true neighborhood feel to it. Owner Darrell Wootton put his young daughter, Lacey, in charge of managing the restaurant, and she and/or chef Wynton Kelly give visitors a hearty “hello” as they come through the front door.

Speaking of hearty, Garden Café offers what Kelly calls comfort food, meaning the menu is full of dishes such as herb-crusted baked chicken, meat loaf and pot roast. But health-conscious folks can find lots of options as well with fresh and flavorful veggie dishes. The restaurant also plans to have a large vegetable and herb garden thriving next to its sunny patio seating soon.

The recipe below is indicative of Garden Café’s simple approach to flavor, letting the essence of the food shine through. Open only for breakfast and lunch, this place is worth seeking out.
