Four homes in Lakewood have been robbed since July 2, in similar burglaries. In all four cases the burglar took out a window to unlock a door, the homeowners were on vacation, and only jewelry and small electronics were stolen. There have been two burglaries on Malcolm Drive and two on Westlake Avenue, and all of them occurred between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to police reports. The most recent burglary was Tuesday.

That the homeowners were on vacation during the burglaries indicates that the thief or thieves cased the homes. In one case, the burglar placed the homeowners’ potted plants in the driveway and in front of the door, said Nancy Wilson, chairman of the Lakewood Crime Watch. When no one had moved them, it signaled that the owners were away.

In all, some $72,000 worth of jewelry, electronics, coins and prescription drugs have been stolen, according to police reports. In one case, $30,000 worth of jewelry was stolen. That nothing bulky has been taken indicates that the burglar might be on foot. The Dallas Police Department is investigating the crimes, Wilson said. But they haven’t gotten back to us yet.
