Bryan Adams High School opened in September 1957. It didn’t take long for an injury to occur.

Joe Soules, a lineman, was injured during the kickoff play of Bryan Adams’ first football season, according to the Nov. 20, 1958, issue of The White Rocker. A story that appeared in the Nov. 9, 1958, edition of The Dallas Morning News reported that Soules’ fifth vertebra was cracked during the Sept. 13 game, and he was cared for at Parkland Hospital; a story that appeared in the Nov. 21, 1958, edition of the News said that Soules broke his neck during the game.

The White Rocker article said that Soules was in the hospital for seven weeks.

“After seven weeks in the hospital, Joe’s doctor bills must be tremendous,” according to the White Rocker article, which was taken from Bryan Adams’ Cougar Chronicle.

In 1958, Bryan Adams High School faced off against Woodrow Wilson High School to raise funds for Bryan Adams’ first football player in school history to be injured during a game.

Services, officials, scorekeepers and stadium fees were donated, so all proceeds from ticket sales went to a fund to help the hurt player.

Bryan Adams ended up beating Woodrow, 41-12.
