It is our crown jewel, our local icon and one of the city’s most prized natural resource. White Rock Lake’s importance in our neighborhood cannot be overstated.

Here at the Advocate, it’s been a constant source of coverage — from efforts to build on it, to keeping it protected to its rich history. Digging around in our archives, we stumbled upon a timeline that gives all the major historical highlights of the lake  — sort of a quick-and-dirty guide from its time as an Indian settlement to the glamorous Miss White Rock Lake pageants of the 1960s to the time Life magazine put a spotlight on the region.

If you want to know a little bit about everything White Rock Lake-related, this 1998 flashback is for you.
