The Taco Cabana on Lower Greenville is closing.
With the Taco Cabana closing on Lower Greenville, the fate of the famous Tango Frogs is in jeopardy.
The beloved 10-foot-tall dancing frogs by Bob “Daddy-O” Wade have been a fixture on the roof of the restaurant since the 1980s. The frogs once sat atop the Tango nightclub, where the Taco Cabana now sits. After a fire, the frogs were separated and didn’t return to their original home until 2014.
Fiesta Restaurant Group, Taco Cabana’s parent company, announced the closure of the Lower Greenville location and 18 others Monday. The closures were part of a plan to improve the bottom line, and shuttered stores were underperforming, Fiesta President and CEO Richard Stockinger told CultureMap.
The corporate office has not yet decided what to do with the pieces of neighborhood art, Taco Cabana regional director Benjamin Boyd said.
“If it was up to me, the’d be staying right here on the roof,” he said. “We’re going to do whatever we have to do to keep them here.”
As the Tango Frogs wait for a permanent home, CultureMap suggested giving them to Lakewood yard art collector Gary Isett or the Dallas Zoo.
