Our Wildcats are smarter than Plano’s Wildcats. Woodrow made the D Magazine’s list of the top high schools in North Texas, beating every high school in the cities of Plano, Richardson, Irving and Mesquite.

With approximately one-fourth of our students enrolled in the Advanced Placement program, we are sending graduates to the best colleges in America and earning a record amount of scholarship money!  Way to go, Woodrow!

I was proud to have the signature of Ruth Collins Sharp Altshuler ’40 on both my SMU degrees when she served as secretary of the board of trustees. Now she is serving as the first female president of the board! Kick ’em, Ruth!

Woodrow Class Reunions set for Oct. include the class of 1980, Oct. 14 (everyone from 1977-83 invited). Call Cheryl Drane at 972-733-9564 or HOUSSOLD@aol.com. Cost is $25.  That crazy class of 1970 is planning its 30th at the Lakewood Theater on Oct. 21. Contact JoCarol Phillips or Carol Lewis Pagilia at carolk@airmail.net or call the theater. Another football titan class, 1963, is compiling an e-mail list for a spring get-together. Contact Cheryl Badley, cbadley@mail.smu.edu or Don Autry, autryd@flash.net. Richard Hagen is looking for 1972 classmates, who should e-mail him at RHagen7503@aol.com.

You should check out planetalumni.com or classmates.com (about 1200 Wildcats are registered). When you read the message board on classmates.com, you will see how Arthur “Dick” Dixon ’35 has helped many people locate friends and even relatives from Woodrow.  He is now planning the class’ 65th reunion.

What? No games at Pleasant Grove Field? Our backsides thank you.

Notes …

Forester Field was named for Herschel Forester, longtime teacher and coach, who taught from the ’20s through the ’50s and whose sons, Herschel and Bill, were SMU and professional football stars.

Hillcrest had “get high” painted on the school sign for many years

Samuell was known for coming to Woodrow Hill (TP hill to the uninitiated) at the lake to pick fights

Lincoln’s half-time announcer always calls it “The Lincoln High School.”
