Woodrow’s current renaissance is recognized all over, even in North Dallas. I recently met a nice couple from Ross Perot’s neighborhood (she a private school administrator, he a partner in a large Texas law firm) on an Irish train to Connemara. When I told them I grew up in the Lakewood area, they immediately commented, “We hear you have a wonderful high school over there.”

Here’s another example: the National Merit Scholarship Program has recognized five Woodrow seniors: Jane Lilly and Ben Wright, Semi-finalists; Casey Brown, David Clore, and Katharine Houpt; Commended Scholars. And You’ll have to call her “Dr.” now — Woodrow Principal Nancy McLaughlin earned her Doctorate of Education in Educational Administration from Baylor University a few months ago.  She has served as our first female principal since 1997 and has 27 years experience here in Dallas.

Those of you who miss the 1960s hamburger hang-out, Charco’s, once located on the northwest corner of Mockingbird and Abrams, have an opportunity to re-live the experience.  Tune up your 1966 GTO and drive to 4902 S. Staples in Corpus Christi, where an outpost of the drive-in still operates. Call 361-991-1522 for directions.

“That ’70s show” will return as my class of 1976 has reserved Winfrey Point on Oct. 13, 2001.  We are formulating plans for a reunion — if your ’70s class is interested in participating, post a notice on classmates.com or e-mail me at krains@demac.com.

By the way, if you want to reserve the White Rock pavilion, you must do so a year in advance by calling 214-670-8748 on the first day of the month — early.

Thanks for all your interest in the column I did on Craftsman Bungalows. They are the rage in L.A. now. A team of set designers recently completed a virtual Bungalow show house featured on television and in several home magazines. Brad Pitt has hired a Craftsman architect and Barbra Streisand conducted a recent Barbara Walters interview in her prize mission oak chairs.

Those of you searching for information on accurate renovations (you who are putting oval Victorian glass doors on your bungalows in Lower Greenville, clip this) should check out the Preservation Dallas Library (214-821-3290) on the Wilson Block of Swiss Avenue. An excellent place for reproductions is crafthome.com, which also produces a fascinating catalogue (509-535-5098).

Just learned of the death of Dean Lueke ’82 of a brain tumor. Dean (sisters Cynthia Lueke Hudson ’80 and Kim Lueke Killough ’81) was one of our best and brightest, having attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with honors from University of Texas at Dallas. He was a senior engineer at Ericsson. Memoriams may be made to Preston Volunteer Emergency Services, Lake Texoma, P.O. Box 518, Pottsboro, Texas 75076.
