There is a saying: “If you want something done right, give it to a Lakewood Mom.”
The Lakewood Early Childhood PTA is filled with just these kind of “get it done” moms.
The organization, in its 43rd year, is currently in the midst of its annual membership drive. Last year, more than 150 members helped raise $35,000 through the annual Home Tour fund-raiser, which directly benefited Lakewood Elementary School.
In conjunction with the tour, the PTA hosts an Arts and Crafts Fair featuring more than 70 artisans and a café offering lunch.
Proceeds from the Home Tour and Craft Fair have provided improved security on the Lakewood Elementary campus, computers and equipment for all grade levels, updated playground equipment, instructional supplies for all classrooms, as well as art and music enrichment programs not otherwise provided by Dallas Independent School District.
Although made up primarily of mothers with young children, there are no restrictions for membership. This year’s membership also includes a nanny.
The PTA is for both the non-working and working women. It offers informative speakers at monthly general meetings with programs to enlighten, entertain and enhance parenting skills. As a plus, child care with a nominal fee is also provided at these meetings. A special night meeting for working women is offered in the spring.
Sources of Support (SOS) adds extra activities for mothers and children, such as play groups and cooking classes. Through these and other activities, Lakewood Early Childhood PTA offers many opportunities for friendship and involvement in the community.
Past President Suzy Cawthon had this perspective: “LECPTA is the perfect opportunity for each of us to develop close friends, share child-rearing joys and woes, and make a positive contribution to this wonderful community we call home.”
The first general meeting is scheduled for Sept. 21 at the Lakewood Country Club. Dues are $15 and lunch will be provided by the PTA.
