The Heights

Change is brewing for the laid-back neighborhood breakfast and coffee joint formerly known as Legal Grounds in Lakewood.

The location is closed for construction, the Legal Grounds sign has come down and a new sign for The Heights has taken its place.

In March we reported Legal Grounds changed ownership. At the time we didn’t know who former owner Eric Johnson sold the company to, but now we know the new owner is Cary Ray of Daddy Jacks on Lowest Greenville.

Ray says he and his business partners operated the business as Legal Grounds for four months while they figured out the next step, but now it’s time to make some changes.

When The Heights opens in the next couple weeks, it will open as a full-service restaurant offering “upscale comfort” food, Ray says.

It will serve breakfast foods, which will include some recipes from Legal Grounds as well as new items, and coffee drinks during the day. Then in the evening it will offer a dinner menu. Ray says The Heights will also have a full bar that will be open until 2 a.m.

“We’re doing something very ambitious,” he says, by trying to harmonize a sit-down restaurant with a take-out coffee business. “We’ve been looking for years for a place to do a concept like this.”

As for the name change, Ray says the name “The Heights” was inspired by East Dallas, since a lot of nearby neighborhoods have the word “heights” in them — Hollywood Heights, Junius Heights, etc.

Most of the construction is geared towards cosmetic changes, Ray says. The Heights will likely have a soft opening in the next week or two, but Ray says it might be a little while before the restaurant reaches full swing.
