According to this e-mail I just received, DISD is about to (or has already) fire about 50 people from its central staff. Here’s the DISD press release:

DALLAS-For the second year in a row, cuts have been made in central administration of the Dallas Independent School District.
The cuts, estimated to save $2.5 million, were made necessary because of increases in utility and fuel costs, as well as a decrease in local and state revenue.
“In challenging budget times, it becomes necessary to look at ways to reduce expenditures and improve efficiencies,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. “This is simply a tightening of the belt.”
Approximately 50 positions in central staff are being eliminated. The cuts will become effective September 1.
“We thank these individuals for their service,” said Hinojosa. “This is not an easy choice to make but it is necessary in order to continue to direct as many resources as possible to our campuses.”

In October 2007, they made the first round of cuts. As reported here, the smaller salaried employees were the first to get the ax then.
