The minute you walk through the door, it hits you: the unmistakably delectable smell of bread baking. Like its namesake suggests, Bread Winners is one part café and one part bakery — and bread is definitely a specialty. In fact, all of the bread on the menu is baked in house, except the marbled rye and sourdough. But Bread Winners offers more than just good bread. Breakfast is served all day during the week, and there’s a must-try weekend brunch, with choices like smoked salmon omelets, beef brisket hash, and one mean chicken fried steak and eggs. But if sunny side up isn’t your style, stop by for lunch or dinner. The herb chicken salad sandwich is made with pesto mayo, so it has more of a punch than the traditional take, and the portabella patty melt is a angus burger stacked with grilled bell peppers, onions, portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese, so it’s nice and hearty. Just save room for a fresh-baked dessert, like the chocolate seduction cake, or a slice of cranberry apple walnut pie. And while you’re at it, order a loaf of bread to go — top sellers include banana nut, zucchini spice and raspberry streusel.
