The scholarship is available to high school seniors pursuing any sort of higher education, whether it be college or trade school. The first-place winner will receive $15,000, the second-place winner will receive $10,000 and the third-place winner will receive $5,000.

The application process consists of two rounds: an application form and an in-person interview. The application form includes a 450-word essay, a signed community service log, the student’s high school transcript and, optionally, a recommendation letter written by one of the student’s teachers.

Ten students who “demonstrate exceptional academic achievements, community involvement and above all an interest in pursuing higher education” will progress to the second round, which is the in-person interview. The interview will be held at City Hall.

Because the scholarship is given out by the Dallas Youth Commission, every step of the application process is overseen by other students. The fifteen students who comprise the youth commission will not only select who moves past the first round into the interview phase, but will also conduct the finalists’ interviews and select the three winners of the scholarship.
