Dallas Fire-Rescue Station No. 17 raised somewhere in the range of $15,000 to $16,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during its three-day “Fill the Boot” campaign April 22-24. The final count won’t be available for several weeks.

The Lakewood station, near Abrams and Belmont, usually raises more money than any other station in Dallas, and once won an award for raising the most for any station in the nation. “The neighbors are great about giving,” said Lt. David Diggs.

Station 17 raised about $22,000 last year, Diggs said. That was the first year that the department reinstated the fundraiser after a one-year lapse due to the city’s panhandling ordinance.
