Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, it’s all about the holidays here in East Dallas. Check out our full holiday guide for a complete list of seasonal events, but here are some highlights happening this weekend.
The Dad’s Club at Stonewall Jackson Elementary has their largest fundraiser this weekend. The Stonewall Cornhole Tournament begins this Saturday at 4 p.m. The tournament is $100 per person (teams of two), and includes food, beverages and a chance to win the tournament along with a cornhole set. Email president@sjedc.org to signup and include the names of both team members.
Employees at Half Price Books all over the nation have been busy making ornaments, which will be sold Dec. 1 and 2 to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. Each dollar spent will provide three meals for those in need in North Texas. Shop the ornament sale at the flagship shop on Northwest Highway on Friday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. until sold out.
A holiday market will accompany the Dallas Arboretum’s Christmas displays, featuring packaged goods, ceramics, jewelry, candles and custom gifts. The market is free with the price of admission, and runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“A Celebration of Color,” featuring more than 20 paintings curated by artist Susan Lecky, opens on Saturday with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bath House Cultural Center. Meet the featured artists and hear the guitar stylings of Chris Richter during the free event. The exhibit will be on view through Jan. 27 whenever the center is open to the public.
On Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., take your bilingual friends to Dallas CASA, at 2757 Swiss Ave. for a reception and information session to learn more about volunteering to be an advocate for children in the foster care system in Dallas County. RSVP here.
St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts presents Jonathan Tsay in recital, where he will play the classics of Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms, Lizst and Wagner. The concert is Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Justus Sunderman gallery at the cathedral. Admission is free.
Head to a free, interactive self-defense workshop and workout at Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense, at 2114 Kidwell, this Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Participants will learn how to avoid danger, fend off threats as well as general self-defense techniques and mentalities. C.C. Young will host Gustavo Romero for a piano concert at The Point this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. This award-winning classical and international musician is playing the event free and open to the pubic.
Another restaurant is opening along the Santa Fe Trail. White Rock Alehouse & Brewery will mark its grand opening Thursday evening. This is a grown up restaurant that pairs its food with its wide selection of brews, and will also have plenty of patio space.
William “Bubba” Flint will be painting a selection of well-known album covers from The 70’s at The Good Pagoda Friday night at 7 p.m. . Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter will be working the turn tables with his favorite ’70s jams, and drinks and light snacks will be served.
