Woodrow hires Duncanville assistant Corey Johnson as head basketball coach

Corey Johnson, assistant basketball coach at Duncanville High School for the past seven years, will serve as the next head coach for Woodrow Wilson.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Duncanville community for allowing me to come back home and help rebuild the basketball program to where it is today,” Johnson told The Dallas Morning News. “For the past seven years, I have had the ability to grow and develop into the coach that I am today, and I am 100 percent ready for this opportunity to lead the Woodrow Wilson boys’ basketball program. For me, it’s bigger than basketball. I’m excited to lead this program to championships on and off the court. I understand that I have been placed in this position to serve this community, and I am going to give my best effort in all areas concerning this program, this school, this district and this city as a whole!”

Johnson will take over the Woodrow basketball program from Patrick Washington, who led the Wildcats through 19 seasons and 14 playoff appearances.

Once a Duncanville basketball player himself, Johnson clenched a state championship as a Panther in 2007. He played  in college at Trinity Valley, graduated from the University of Houston and then served as a graduate assistant for Ole Miss before returning to Duncanville as a coach. This will be his first head coaching job.

While coaching at Duncanville, his team secured the school’s fourth state title. The Panthers entered the 2020 state tournament as the No. 1 team in Texas, but the pandemic ended the season early.

The Woodrow basketball team welcomed Johnson in a recent tweet:
