Bad news for neighborhood copper thieves … the folks at Oncor/TU Electric/whatever they’re called now are "implementing a type of nanotechnology in its products that will cut down on copper wire theft" at Oncor facilities and substations, according to the Dallas Business Journal, which says "the technology invisibly marks Oncor equipment, particularly its copper wire, so it can be identified after it has been stolen." As you probably know, a stolen copper wire means your system isn’t grounded, so when a lightening storm like yesterday’s comes along, the ungrounded building is in danger of becoming a huge Roman candle. Plus, missing copper wire makes it easier to be shocked or injured by stray electrical charges.
