Winner - Chocolate Rolo Cookie

Terry Macias’ winning cookie – Chocolate Rolo

The kitchen is the heart of the home. At a crowded dinner party or just doing homework after soccer practice, everyone gathers there. Lured by heavenly smells and conversation, we have memories of favorite family dishes and shared meals. Food brings people together.

Last weekend’s Munger Place Days included a cookie baking contest which added a bit of old-fashioned, neighborly fun to the weekend’s activities. With eleven entries ranging from healthy chocolate chip to Brer Rabbit molasses, the competition was deliciously spirited.

As host, I gained 5 pounds just organizing the event.

Representing area businesses (Whole Foods Lakewood, The Garden Café, Central Market Cooking School and The Lakewood Advocate), our judges took their duties seriously, tasting and smelling each cookie, grading on taste, creativity, and overall appearance. A sweet gig.

Congratulations to Munger resident Terry Macias, winner of the Munger Place Days Cookie Baking Contest. Her first place Chocolate Rolo Cookie won the judges’ rave reviews and a spot in the upcoming Old City Park Christmas Bake Sale December 8-9, 2012.

Terry Macias and sous chef daughters Melissa and Melanie baked the winning cookie

Kudos also to second and third place winners Chris Farish (Gingersnaps) and Molly Camp (Molasses Spice), respectively.

Cookie winners received gifts generously donated by sponsors Lakewood Candle Company and The Lily Field.

Chocolate Rolo Cookie

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 stick of butter

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup dutch cocoa powder

1/3 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

3 teaspoons milk (this is optional–use if the batter seems dry)

1 package Rolo’s candies

Mix all ingredients together.  Take a small ball of dough and form a ball around the Rolo.  Only use enough dough to cover the Rolo so it can spread through the cookie. Place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12 minutes.
