The Katy Trail extension from Ellsworth to Worcola, including a pedestrian bridge over Mockingbird Lane to the DART station, has been delayed for over 10 years. But construction on the .62-mile hike-and-bike path could begin as soon as August.

The path originally was funded with $6.4 million from a federal program that supported transportation projects that contribute to air-quality improvements. But that money didn’t come through, so the Regional Transportation Council agreed to pay for part of the project with toll funds. Dallas County will pay $1 million, and the city will pay almost $2.5 million from the 2006 bond program.

Last year, the city extended the Katy Trail across Central Expressway to Glencoe Park. The trail extension will run from Glencoe Park, at Ellsworth and Winton, to Worcola, near the DART tracks.

Construction is expected to be completed in December 2012.
