Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law offers free one-hour tax consultations for anyone who can’t afford attorney services and is facing an IRS audit, appeal or collection process; involved in innocent spouse relief; or needing to resolve a past-due tax matter. Lakewood Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) needs neighbors to join the program. While on patrol, volunteers observe and report suspicious behavior to the Dallas Police. The program is non-confrontational in nature. It requires a minimum of two hours a week tailored to each volunteer’s schedule. Casa de Vida, a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expressway. It’s strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music. The SPCA of Texas runs an injured animal rescue ambulance service to help strays. SPCA will respond to calls in our neighborhood from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Field officers will evaluate injured animals and take them to the SPCA, Highland Park Animal Clinic or an emergency clinic for treatment. 214.651.7387.

The National League of American Pen Women has announced a call for entries for Expressions 2009, A Visual Arts Dallas Branch Competition. The annual show will be at the Lakewood Library, Nov. 12-Dec. 5, with the artists’ reception on Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m. Deadline for entries is Oct. 7, 2009. Entry is open to all artists, men and women, over the age of 18. Judge is Enrique Fernández Cervantes, curator at the Bath House Cultural Center. For the prospectus and entry form, visit nlapwdallas.org or call Susan Moss Cooper at 214.327.6648.

EDUCATION

Bryan Adams High School principal Cynthia Goodsell was named the DISD 2009 Principal of the Year. She was awarded a check for $2,500. Goodsell has been principal at Bryan Adams since 2006, and has been an educator for more than 30 years.

Sara Seymour is the Bryan Adams valedictorian. She will be attending New York University to study theater. The salutatorian is Adrienne Glaze. She will be attending Southern Methodist University to study English.

Sarah Delph is the Woodrow Wilson High School valedictorian. She will be attending Rhodes College to study political science. The salutatorian is Bryce Romney. He will be attending Brigham Young to study engineering. These two Woodrow students also were two of 51 graduating DISD seniors honored as Principals’ Outstanding Graduates by the Dallas Education Foundation.

The Woodrow Wilson High School PTA is seeking alumni donations for college scholarships. Seniors who have not received more than $5,000 from other scholarship sources will be eligible for this PTA scholarship. Martha and Don Fox recently were honored for 15 years of volunteer service at the English Language Ministry, which provides free English as a second language instruction for East Dallas residents. The couple has volunteered with the program ever since it was founded.
