City Council today approved an ordinance to regulate farmers markets.

The regulations include a yearly fee of $200-$300 per market, depending on the size. It also allows for markets to operate up to 28 nonconsecutive days per year. Markets must be outside downtown and in places not zoned residential, and they must be at least one mile apart from each other.

Sarah Perry of White Rock Local Market says she’s happy with the ordinance.

“We’re happy we’ll be able to have the market,” she says. “Before, it wasn’t clear who would give us a permit or what the restrictions would be.”
