We’ve been writing about the White Rock YMCA’s pending move across the street to a temporary location, so today we thought you’d like to see a floor-plan for how that facility will be laid out as the Y continues fund-raising to build it’s permanent facility down the street at the former Trinity Lutheran Church location.

The Y will be moving to 7324 Gaston (above the Subway restaurant) directly across the street from the current location during the next couple of weeks. The 16,000-square-foot facility will offer most of the same amenities currently being offered, with the entrance to the building either off Gaston or East Grand on the second level of that two-story center.

Meanwhile, the Y continues to look at preliminary designs for its new facility, which is envisioned to be a two-story, contemporary building designed by neighborhood architect Craig Reynolds (Reynolds’ firm also designed the addition to Woodrow Wilson High School being completed this year). A main feature of the building will be an almost facility-long wall of glass facing west and looking out over green space (currently a triangle of grass and trees, all of which are expected to be maintained in the plans) and onto an outdoor recreation area that will be home to outdoor classes, walking/cycling activities and summer camp events.

The projected $12 million project — assuming an additional $6 million can be raised over and above the $6 million the Y received from selling the current facility, says Y administrator Derek Smith — will include a gymnasium, aerobics studio, cycling center, wellness studio, playground and, if funding can be raised, an indoor-outdoor natatorium.

The current Y’s outdoor pool generally is jammed during the summer, so the new Y could include a dual-purpose pool that allows for indoor lap swimming as well as outdoor sunbathing and play-swimming.

Smith says that several neighborhood families have stepped up with “six-figure gifts”, and the fund-raising program has just begun. (Click on each picture to enlarge for readability.)
