Celebrating the Campus Teachers of the Year in District 2, and 'Discover DISD'

Dallas ISD recognized its Campus Teachers of the Year at a special ceremony in October, and it was a privilege to celebrate these outstanding educators both districtwide and in District 2.

To give you an idea of the outstanding educators in District 2, here is a little background information on two of these Campus Teachers of the Year.

K.B. Polk Campus Teacher of the Year Amelia Carroll knew from a young age that she would be a teacher. When she was growing up in Chicago, school served as an escape and a safe place for her.

Carroll wanted to be a teacher so she could help students who were in tough situations like she was growing up. She loves seeing how students grow and build confidence over the school year.

In particular, Carroll loves the diversity of K.B. Polk and how she can reach so many different types of students.

Meanwhile, Ben Milam Elementary Campus Teacher of the Year Maria Hernandez, has taught in Dallas ISD for 10 years. As the oldest of four children, Hernandez had to be a strong role model and adjust to her younger siblings as they struggled and succeeded. Hernandez said being an older sister prepared her to be a teacher.

When asked what makes a teacher successful, Hernandez said they need to love the job, be flexible, and have plenty of patience.

I am immensely thankful to our District 2 teachers such as Hernandez and Carroll who tirelessly work with our students. Here are the other District 2 Campus Teachers of the Year:

In other District 2 news….

Seniors in District 2 who attend Hillcrest High School and North Dallas High School can apply to receive free tuition at any Dallas County Community College District college through the recently announced Dallas County Promise program.

The Discover Dallas ISD citywide school fair is coming up, and it’s a chance to check out the many educational options available to students and families throughout the area. To make it easier for parents to navigate, this year the fair takes place in four quadrants of the city over two separate Saturdays. Parents are welcome to attend any of the events. Magnets, special programs and transformation schools from across the district will be at all four events.
