Somehow, our neighborhood’s reputation for being filled with the city’s most sensitive artist types doesn’t quite mesh with the continuous flow of traffic at Kirby’s Steakhouse’s valet stand.

But judging by the legendary restaurant’s popularity, there apparently are enough deep-pocketed carnivores around to balance out the delicate culinary leanings of any resident starving artists.

In this neighborhood, if you want a prime cut of steak cooked to your idea of perfection, Kirby’s is your destination of choice. Whether you’re a red-meat purist or novice, you’ll find what you’re looking for here, be it a rare New York strip that’s cool to the touch on the inside, or some steak sauce to slather on your well-done rib eye (just don’t expect the chef not to roll his eyes at that request).

Though the menu is dominated by beef, Kirby’s also offers some fine seafood and pasta choices. And be forewarned: If your idea of going out to eat involves drinks, appetizers, entrees and dessert (such as the homemade chocolate cake shown below), you’ll pay the price at Kirby’s, at $25-$50 or more per head.
