The Dr. Frank E. Rutherford Veterinary Hospital in East Dallas has been honored by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association as one of four recipients of the 2009 Heritage Practice Award. This award recognizes veterinary clinics in Texas that have been in continuous operation for 50 years or more.

The Lakewood Library Friends are collecting gently-used books, CDs, and DVDs for a book sale on Saturday, Sept. 12. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Lakewood Library. Parents and Advocates for Slower Learners is a non-profit organization with the goal of providing social opportunities for adults with developmental difficulties. Adult slow learners 17 and older, as well as their family members, are welcome to join PASL. Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law offers free one-hour tax consultations for anyone who can’t afford attorney services and is facing an IRS audit, appeal or collection process; involved in innocent spouse relief; or needing to resolve a past-due tax matter. Lakewood Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) needs neighbors to join the program. While on patrol, volunteers observe and report suspicious behavior to the Dallas Police. The program is non-confrontational in nature. It requires a minimum of two hours a week tailored to each volunteer’s schedule. Casa de Vida, a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expressway. It’s strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music. The SPCA of Texas runs an injured animal rescue ambulance service to help strays. SPCA will respond to calls in our neighborhood from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Field officers will evaluate injured animals and take them to the SPCA, Highland Park Animal Clinic or an emergency clinic for treatment. 214.651.7387.

The National League of American Pen Women has announced a call for entries for Expressions 2009, A Visual Arts Dallas Branch Competition. The annual show will be at the Lakewood Library, Nov. 12 through Dec. 5, with the artists’ reception on Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m. Deadline for entries is Oct. 7. Entry is open to all artists, men and women, over the age of 18. Judge is Enrique Fernández Cervantes, curator at the Bath House Cultural Center. For the prospectus and entry form, visit nlapwdallas.org or call Susan Moss Cooper at 214.327.6648.

The Woodrow Wilson High School PTA is seeking alumni donations for college scholarships. Seniors who have not received more than $5,000 from other scholarship sources will be eligible for this PTA scholarship. Melanie Ogé has been named the new youth director for Lakewood’s Northridge Presbyterian Church. Ogé majored in religious studies at Austin College, and she completed four years of at the Posey Leadership Institute.

White rock resident Holly Walker has been named Lakehill Preparatory School’s new Director of Admission. The Lakehill graduate and parent of an incoming kindergarten student will officially begin August 1, 2009. Walker replaces Susanne Seitz, who recently celebrated ten years of service to Lakehill.
