Mockingbird Central Plaza is losing two longtime tenants, as Burger King and Premier Video make way for BurgerFi and Uptown Cheapskate.

BurgerFi is a national franchise that emphasizes hormone-free beef and sustainable decor. BurgerFi (short for “burgerfication”) started in Florida, but now has locations all over the country. Brandt Stravlo is the franchise owner who hopes to bring 14 BurgerFi restaurants to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The location at Mockingbird and McMillan will be the first one in Dallas.

BurgerFi’s buns are branded with the BurgerFi logo and everything is made from scratch. “There is no freezer in the building,” Stravlo says. The decor and products, from the chairs to the ketchup packets, are made of recycled materials. The fast-casual restaurant will serve burgers, hot dogs, fries, wine and craft beer. Stavlo hopes to open the restaurant in April in the old Burger King location at 5456 E. Mockingbird Lane.

Meanwhile, Premier Video, bastion of a bygone era, moved out last year and will be replaced by Uptown Cheapskate, a retail resale clothing store at 4500 E. Mockingbird Ln. #104. Similar to Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange, Uptown Cheapskate calls itself a higher-end retail resale shop.

Today, store owners begin building up their selection by purchasing trendy and lightly worn clothes from the community. The store is positioned to serve SMU students, but it includes clothing for teens and adults. Managers hope to be ready to sell clothes by the end of April or early May.

The store will be run by franchise owner Tracy Booth and her husband, Craig. Tracy’s background is in retail fashion and Craig ran small businesses before this venture.

“We pay cash on the spot,” Craig says. “We turn the clothes around and people end up getting up to 70 percent discounts. It just works out really well.”
