The 8tracks have come a long way since first performing at a 25-year class reunion for Bryan Adams High School. On Wednesday, the band will perform for thousands of hockey fans at the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The classic rock group will serve as the house band during the game. It will play to the live audience during commercials and other in-game breaks, keys player Greg Todora said.

The 8tracks will join Grammy Award-winning artists Dan + Shay and two-time Grammy-nominated country trio Midland on the entertainment lineup.

Todora, a 1979 Bryan Adams graduate, started the band in 2004 to perform at his 25-year class reunion. Since then, the six-piece band has played in venues throughout Dallas, including the Green Elephant, the Barley House and the now closed Lakewood Bar & Grill.

“It was so much fun we decided we wanted to keep this thing going,” he said. “It took off from there and evolved into The 8tracks.”

An event-booking company contacted The 8tracks in early December and asked if bandmates were available for an undisclosed event on New Year’s Day. A week later, the musicians discovered they were among several bands in the running to perform at the Winter Classic showdown between the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators.

“We got the green light and said, ‘Absolutely,'” Todora said. “This will be new for us, but we’re prepared to play as long as they want us to play.”

The 8tracks will perform a variety of classic rock songs inspired by Journey, Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon, Queen, Kansas, Boston and more.

“Classic rock, people still love it,” Todora said. “People in their teens and 20s know our music, as well as their parents. We appeal to audiences of all generations.”

Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cotton Bowl.
