Number three on the White Rock Conservancy/Dallas Parks Board priority list is the rebuilding of the Dreyfuss Club. The burning of the Dreyfuss Club in 2006 was a catalyst for the formation of the White Rock Conservancy. I remember Councilman Sheffield Kadane telling me that it worried him that there were no funds to replace a building as significant to our neighborhood as the Dreyfuss Club—it was soon after the fire that he, former councilman Gary Griffith, and others started organizing the new fundraising conglomerate. Now, the Conservancy has been working with a City of Dallas architect over the past months on a design for the new Dreyfuss building, which will occupy about the same space as the former club, and may be a little bigger. “Our Building and Grounds Committee meets/talks with the city and its architect at least quarterly. It is my hope that the city might be ready to announce a design between now and the end of March,” Griffith says. We wouldn’t start fundraising until a final design is determined and our board formally votes to engage in the project.” The cost of rebuilding the club is estimated at $3 million and no money is yet allocated for the project.
