Looking for something to do over the holiday weekend?
Art on Main in the Old East Dallas area will be open this Saturday, so you can check out the Between Gazes and Silences exhibition by Dallas artist Ivette Ramos Levy.
“Ivette’s work is imaginative and visually striking — filled with multi-eyed figures, expressive characters, masks, symbolic objects and bold color,” Art on Main owner Andrea Lamarsaude said in an email. “Her pieces explore themes of self-reflection, transformation and the inner worlds we discover in silence. It’s unlike anything else currently being shown in Dallas and highlights the vibrancy of the East Dallas arts community.”
The pieces in this exhibit are certainly unique. Levy’s art takes the form of paintings, sculpture and ceramics that depict eyes, faces and figures that are otherworldly and fragmented. According to a press release, she takes inspiration from psychologist Carl Jung’s writings on the shadow (hidden, repressed parts of the self) and Joseph Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey, a template of storytelling that follows a protagonist’s transformation.

“In my work, I’m exploring the places where we meet ourselves — the quiet threshold between fear and revelation,” Levy said in the press release. “I want viewers to feel like they’ve stepped into a conversation with their inner world.”
According to her bio, Levy describes eyes, the idea of being perceived without spoken words, as haunting. By creating many eyes, she leans into this dynamic and the uneasiness.
Between Gazes and Silences was extended from its original run and will now be showing through Dec. 20. Art on Main is typically open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
