Owner Sallie Baxter, who grew up in Highland Park, said Lower Greenville is her favorite neighborhood, and since she was a kid, her family has had rental properties in the area.

She’s been practicing yoga for about a decade, and she started teaching at the beginning of 2020. When she received her MBA from SMU in 2017, she was voted most likely to open a yoga studio in another country.

“I think I always just had that kind of motivation or inspiration to open my own space,” she said. “But of course, I wanted to be able to teach first, and I knew the timing would work out when it was right.”

Six years later, the timing is right.

She started looking for a place to house her business last summer. In September, a friend from business school told her about the space on Greenville Avenue. Next to Feng Cha, it was formerly home to Moon Taxi, which moved across the street.

There wasn’t much renovation work to be done, Baxter said, unlike other options that would have needed a lot of construction. She removed a couple of walls to create a large room, added a small hallway upstairs to connect two rooms, painted and redid the floors.

Her younger brother created some artwork for inside, and a few more pieces are coming.

Balanced Being, which employs over two dozen instructors, offers a variety of yoga classes, such as high intensity, restorative and stretching. These are in addition to the wellness classes, including sound meditation, Reiki meditation and breath work.

“That’s why ‘balanced being’ came to me as the name, because I want us to all have more balance in our lives and be balanced human beings, not just focus on the physical stuff,” Baxter said. “I feel like so many studios, it’s just come in and get your workout, get your sweat in, and then go on about your day. And there aren’t enough offerings for mental wellness, emotional wellness.”

Many of the teachers have been working in Dallas for several years, and they already have a student base.

“This is something new and something that’s our own and something that we really get to pour into,” Baxter said. “And I’m trying to enable all my teachers to do and teach what they’re passionate about versus teach a specific class type that the studio does.”

All new members get a week of free classes. There are several paid options after that. A drop-in class costs $18, and a day pass, which covers multiple classes in a day, costs $30. A monthly membership covering unlimited classes is $111, and a mini membership, $88, includes eight classes per month. A class pack includes 10 classes over six months, and that’s $150.

The studio will also sell CBD, Delta 8 and Delta 9 products, along with essential oils and crystals.

Balanced Being Yoga & Wellness is located at 1917 Greenville Ave.
