Bake and Play Cafe, in the southeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams, opened right on schedule in mid-July, and it has been “crazy busy” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. — you know, between naps — says co-owner Dee Moore.
We wrote about the parent-kid haven in June, and so far everything has turned out exactly how East Dallas moms Moore and Kelly Kemp hoped it would.
There’s a party room where kids can make their own pizzas and then decorate cupcakes or cookies, there’s a cafe with an extensive menu and free wifi for mom and dad, and a 1600-square-foot play area for the kiddos, which is supervised from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There’s an $8 all-day cover for the play room (families can even leave and come back, Moore says), or parents can purchase a discount card for $50 for 10 visits.
Bake and Play is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, but Moore and Kemp are still planning to eventually offer late-night “parents night out” events on Friday and Saturday when parents can drop their kiddos off for an evening of supervised baking, games and movie time.
“So we have you to thank for this wonderful place?” visiting Lakewood mom Erin Johnston asked Moore. “It’s really fantastic. We just love it, and we so appreciate you making it something that the boys like too.”
“We tried to keep it very gender neutral,” Moore told her. “We even wanted it to be dad neutral. We didn’t want it to be all about moms.”
“You can tell a lot of thought and care went into it,” Johnston said, who has two boys — a one and a half-year-old and three-year-old.
