I would never claim to know what moms want, seeing as I’m not a mom. But if being the coolest aunt in the world wins me any brownie points, then I’ll go out on a limb and say, I think moms are going to like (maybe even love) the new Bake and Play Cafe, coming soon to East Dallas, a lot.
For starters, it’s co-owned by three women who do know what moms want, because between the three of them they have six youngsters under the ages of 8. Actually, the idea for Bake and Play Cafe came about because it was something they, as moms, wanted. Plus they’d heard a few other moms complain that there aren’t any party/indoor play areas close by.
So imagine this: Next time you’re wondering, “What in the world am I going to do for my kid’s birthday party?” Here’s a possibility. The Bake and Play Cafe will have a large baking room where kids from ages 3 to teens can make everything from cupcakes to pizzas. Co-owner Kelly Kemp says no need to stress about paper plates, balloons and cheap party favors. Parents can just tell the staff what they want, and then let the Bake and Play people work their magic. There will also be a craft area where the kiddos can decorate their aprons and chef garb.
Bake and Play will also host themed Kids Camps, featuring cooking classes and crafts of all kinds. Kemp says they’ve been brainstorming themes for the past few months. So far they’ve dreamed up parties where kids will bake their own Valentine’s Day treats or make their own Mother’s Day fruit bouquets. Plus, Kemp says they’re also considering hosting date night events on Friday and Saturday night, where parents can drop their kids off to bake, play and craft with other kids, while they enjoy a relaxing night out.
All that sounds wonderful, right? That’s just the half of it. Under the same roof is also a cafe where, during the week, parents can grab a cup of coffee and a cupcake or some other delicious baked good. The kids can run off to play with other kids (supervised, by the way) in the playroom while mom or dad mooches off the Wi-Fi. The playroom will feature several “play stations,” such as dress-up, a train track, and others. In the cafe, Bake and Play will serve a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The venue is currently under construction in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams. They’re right next to Taco Joint, if you know where that is. Kemp says they’re aiming to open mid-July.
