Dallas police have made one arrest in the investigation of a deadly shooting of a 6-year-old girl in Old East Dallas Wednesday afternoon, police said.

On Jan. 10, at approximately 2:40 p.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting call at a townhome complex in the 2100 block of North Fitzhugh Avenue.  

When officers arrived they found a 6-year-old girl shot inside of a residence at the location. The child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where she died.

Further investigation determined a handgun was left unsecured inside the residence. Two adults and two other juveniles were inside the residence at the time of the shooting, police said.

Dallas Police still do not know how the child was shot.

On Thursday, Dallas Police arrested 19-year-old Damariya Sowels and charged him with tampering with physical evidence in connection to the case.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, police found that the gun belonged to Sowels. The teen admitted to leaving two weapons on top of a PlayStation in one of the bedrooms, FOX 4 reported.

While searching the home, officers found both guns in a backpack Sowels allegedly hid in the garage, police said. 

At the time of the incident the mother was at a funeral home planning services for her 14-year-old son, Ah’bralen Rider, who was shot off Harry Hines Boulevard on New Year’s Eve, FOX 4 reported

The investigation is ongoing.
