Former Texas Tech and Carter High School hoops standout Andre Emmett was killed early Monday in Old East Dallas, authorities said.
Emmett was sitting in front of his house in the 1800 block of North Prairie Avenue, between Munger and Ross avenues, at about 2:30 a.m. when two male assailants approached, police said. One of the assailants pulled out a gun, and Emmett was shot as he tried to run away.
A passerby found Emmett several hundred feet from his home and called 911. First responders took him to an area hospital, where he later died.
Witnesses told police the assailants fled in a white Chrysler 3000 onto North Fitzhugh toward Ross.
Texas Tech’s basketball program posted condolences Monday afternoon on Twitter, calling the 2018 inductee into the school’s hall of fame an “incredible person” on and off the court.
“Thank you for the many amazing memories you helped create,” the post said “Thank you for inspiring the entire Texas Tech family.”

Before he became a lead scorer at Texas Tech, Emmett graduated from Dallas’ Carter High School, the Dallas Morning News reported. After the 2004 NBA draft, Emmett played with the Memphis Grizzlies and later with the New Jersey Nets.
