North Henderson is a study in urban renewal. The surrounding neighborhood includes low-income apartments and neglected houses. Those are mixed with yuppie-owned Tudor revivals and posh new apartments renting for $1.50 a foot.

There is shopping, dining, art and nightlife. And about once or twice a year, there is a disturbing violent crime.

Last week, police found a woman in her 30s, lying naked and beaten on Garrett, about two blocks from Henderson where she had been out with friends. The woman told police she had left a bar shortly after closing time. That’s after 2 a.m. And apparently, she walked to her car, which was parked on Garrett, by herself.

That’s when someone punched her in the face.

Lt. Ches Williams, a police spokesman, told the Wilshire Heights Neighborhood Association there was no need to be alarmed about crime in the neighborhood as long as people take precaution. Don’t walk alone on dark streets, he said, and park in well-lit areas.

Better yet, I say, don’t park on Garrett or Moser or any other surrounding street when you go out on Henderson. Use valet.

Williams also suggested that revelers not get so drunk because it could cause a person to become more vulnerable to crime. Good advice.
