Dallas ISD is hosting a virtual African American Read-In on Feb. 26 to encourage people to read and promote diversity in literature, especially works by African American authors.
The first read-in happened in 1990 and was started by the National Council of Teachers of English. This year, authors taking part in the read-in include Nic Stone, Derrick Barnes, Jewell Parker Rhodes and Christopher Paul Curtis.
This event is part of DISD’s “I Matter, We Matter, Words Matter” initiative, which began in October and is meant to help Black students relate more to books they read in school.
There are two components to the event, organized by DISD’s Racial Equity Office and Teaching and Learning Division. The first Zoom meeting runs from 9 a.m. to noon and is designed for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Parents can participate in a session from 3:30-5 p.m.
During the sessions, there will be performances of original poems and songs, storytelling, dancing, and parent giveaways and workshops. Register here.
