For kids, school is out for the summer. For senior citizens, it has only just begun.

The Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center, a program for adults 55 and older, will offer its Summer Learning Adventures on Fridays through Aug. 28.

Among the classes this semester: “The Bible and the World,” which features representatives from various organizations that reflect the Bible’s impact;  “Poetry Corner,” an opportunity to share favorite poems, write poems and meet professional poets and “Book Reviews and More,” which features book reviews and presentations about the Preservation Society and the Horticulture Center.

Some other options are a weekly travelogue, current events discussions, French lessons and intermediate bridge.

Each Friday also includes a square dance class, a brown bag lunch (beverages and desserts are provided) and after-lunch bridge play.

Other Shepherd activities include line dancing, the Lunch Bunch and the Sharps and Flats choral group.

Carolyn Dennis, executive director of the center, says all programs are developed thanks to the work of the center’s members. The guest lecturers and teachers are all local volunteers.

“All the hard work that goes into producing that schedule is done by the members themselves,” Dennis says. “That’s a founding principle of the centers nationwide, that programs are led by the membership.”

Participation in the center provides educational and social opportunities, Dennis says.

“It’s a place where people can use the talents they developed in the workplace,” she says. “After retirement, some people see that as the end of themselves as creative and purposeful people.

“This is a way to use the talents they have, and to develop new ones.”

Registration fee is $17. Call 823-2583 for more information or a registration packet.
