Dallas Morning News metro columnist and East Dallas resident Sharon Grigsby penned a column today about the dangers of dogs who aren’t on their leash.
Neighbor Virginia Whittington’s 10-year-old dog Ray was on a walk Aug. 5 with his longtime dog walker Gregory Ferrara at Lakewood Park on Williamson when an off-leash dog bolted away from its owner and pinned Ray to the ground. Ferrara had to put the other dog in a choke hold to get it off, but Ray suffered a broken hip and thousands of dollars in medical bills.
Off leash dogs have taken life in the worst of circumstances in Dallas, and Dallas Animal Services (DAS) has been under fire for not controlling the loose dog problem in southern Dallas, but two parks in East Dallas are on DAS’ short list of places to patrol for off-leash hounds: Glencoe Park and White Rock Lake. DAS officers arrive at the parks at random times to check for off-leash animals, handing out tickets and information about fixing and microchipping pets.
DAS says they have issued fewer tickets with each visit to the parks, and have picked up 16,000 loose dogs so far this fiscal year. Read the entire column here.
