Dallas ISD Trustee Sarah Weinberg
Greetings, District 2!
Fall is here, bringing cooler days, State Fair fun, and fresh energy onto the campuses. Here’s a sampling of Dallas ISD happenings from the past month:
Dallas ISD District 2 Monthly Update:
Growth worth celebrating and fighting for: Kudos to my esteemed colleague, Board President Joe Carreón, for highlighting our district investments and the resulting success in a recent Dallas Morning News editorial.
Embracing AI: Thanks to a generous Texas Instruments Foundation grant, Dallas ISD is partnering with Educate Texas to support teaching methods relating to challenging math concepts through personalized feedback.
Something to cheer about: Woodrow Wilson High School senior Daniela R. shows how extracurriculars build confidence and support academics through her dedication to the cheer team. Guided by her coach and recently named Dallas ISD Counselor of the Year Ashley Johnson, she proves spirit has no limits.
College credit: Dallas ISD leads the nation in students graduating high school with an associate degree; more than one in 10 seniors achieved this milestone in 2025. See a news piece, here, and explore the range of programs offered across the district, here. This is life-changing work!
September Board of Trustees meeting debrief: Dallas ISD had its regular board briefing and meeting. I’ve chosen to highlight a few items below:
College and Career Readiness (2025 Goals): In the last year of the 2025 college and career readiness goals and progress measures, a slight 9% readiness was reported with the following highlights in the subset measures:
- Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Readiness: 2024 graduates showed a 25% increase, reaching 59% overall; Dallas ISD also posted one of the largest urban gains in college readiness test results (+8%). Preliminary 2025 college readiness test results show slight growth in this area. Note that college and career readiness reporting has a year lag for Texas Education Agency (TEA) purposes.
- Industry-Based Certifications (IBCs): District met targets, but percentages declined due to the new TEA rule requiring two courses + exam (vs. one course + exam previously).
- Looking Ahead: Strategic advising and support will expand to help more students reach college and career readiness.
Baseline Benchmarks: In both reading and math, students’ beginning of year I-ready levels at elementary and middle school were similar to last year’s. With focused writing strategies, math academies, supplemental weekly instructional videos, and strong campus leadership teams, Dallas ISD educators are actively engaging students and closely monitoring their progress.
Dallas ISD bond construction update: Across the district, campus upgrades funded by the proceeds from the 2020 Bond continue, with more information found on the bond website.
- Five new schools opened in August, with three more on track to open in January. A 2020 State of the Bond event will be held at 5 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Dr. L.G. Pinkston Sr. High School to provide an update on how the program is providing modern facilities, generating new interest in our schools, and growing the Dallas economy.
- Planning for Bond 2026 continues with Citizens Bond Steering Committee meetings in full swing. A full schedule of the meetings can be found here.
