“ZimSculpt” includes 100 pieces of art made in Zimbabwean.
For the first time in the southern half of the country, the internationally acclaimed exhibition “ZimSculpt” will be on display, this time at the Dallas Arboretum. The display includes 100 sculptures created by artists in Zimbabwean from stone, which are available for purchase. You can meet artists Passmore Mupindiko and Aron Kapembeza, who will be talking about their work on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Be sure to catch their live sculpting demo in the Marketplace after the talk. You can also take the kids to celebrate Easter at the Arboretum. Friday, Saturday and Sunday all feature holiday-themed events including a Sunday brunch, photos with the Easter bunny and a “Eggstravaganza.” Get a full schedule here, everything except for the brunches is included with admission.
The Granada Theater and its sister venue Sundown at the Granada are celebrating decades past with two different parties this weekend. First up on Saturday, the ‘80s Prom Party marks its third year with a showcase from Live 80, a cover band best known for classic hits from The Cure, Duran Duran and U2. All proceeds will benefit the Mayor’s Star Council, a program to develop new civic leaders ages 25-40 from a wide variety of backgrounds. The party starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15-$49 and available here. A little later in the night, you can travel next door to the Sundown at the Granada and into the 1990s. The Weezer cover band Weezing will perform songs of the era from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. There is no charge to attend that second show.
Speaking of the Sundown at the Granada, the venue launches its Summer Movie Series tonight, Wednesday, with an 8:30 p.m. showing of “Magic Mike.” Best of all, all of the films are totally free to attend — see the schedule here.
Union Coffee will host Maundy Thursday in honor of Easter this week at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 2443 Abrams. The traditional evening worship service, set for 7-8:30 p.m., includes a pot luck dinner and commemorates the Last Supper. All are welcome to attend at no cost, but register here and say what type of dish you’re bringing.
Hovvdy will play at set at Good Records, 1808 Greenville, from 5-6 p.m. on Saturday. There is no charge to attend. The Austin band made up of Dallas natives will be taking off on an East Coast tour after the show.
Toasted Coffee + Kitchen will showcase its cooking classes on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. It’s a chance to try some foods, ask questions and learn more about what the new eatery offers. There is no cost to attend. The restaurant is located at 5420 Ross Ave.
