J.L. Long Middle School is one of the neighborhood’s International Baccalaureate campuses.

The 24th-annual Long Run is on this year after a two-year break because of the pandemic.

J.L. Long Middle School’s PTA hosts the run and uses proceeds from the event support a variety of activities and programs including:

  • The International Baccalaureate Middle Years program
  • The peace pantry
  • Leadership Cadet Corps uniforms
  • Instruments for the band and orchestra
  • Equipment for science labs
  • Supplemental books and educational materials
  • Entry fees and transportation costs for the math and science team, athletics and music competitions
  • Student gardens and campus beautification initiatives
  • 6th grade “Buc Camp” orientation

Early registration for the certified 5K and 1K family fun run and walk is open through April 1; a $25 fee covers participation in the event, a race T-shirt and dinner.

There’s also an option for family registration, which costs $150 and includes five race entries, a yard sign, T-shirts and dinner for each person.

Course for Long Run.

The races, which begin and end at Willis C. Winters Park at 100 S. Glasgow Drive, are scheduled for April 14. The 1K loops around J.L. Long and Woodrow Wilson and begins at 6 p.m. The course for the 5K, which begins at 6:30 p.m., includes the Santa Fe Trail and East Dallas neighborhood streets.

Awards will be given to the winners of different age groups in the 5K.

After the race, runners can stick around for food, refreshments and entertainment by the Long cheerleaders, dance team and band.
