On Thursday, Project Hope: Meet the Artists reception is at St. Matthew’s Sundermann Gallery. Work by talented, struggling artists is on display through May 19. St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts’ initiative provides a safe and encouraging space for homeless Dallas citizens to create, exhibit and sell original artwork. Recently awarded a Special Support Grant from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the pilot project is a collaboration with local artists Cristina Estrella Riggs and Jessica L. Bell, who believe the effort will improve connections within the community and hopefully generate income for artists.
The White Rock Lake Car Club — a group of vintage-vehicle enthusiasts helmed by 16-year-old Ricky Estrada — hosts a car show featuring cars constructed circa 1989 in the Rooster Hardware lot, that’s 10233 E. Northwest Highway, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. UPDATE: Due to rain, the event has been moved to May 13 (same time and location, just a new date).
Fur Baby Gala and Auction at Dallas Elks Lodge #71, 8550 Lullwater: Saturday from 6:30-10 p.m., Animal Allies of Texas promises a fun-filled evening featuring food, live entertainment plus silent and live auctions, all benefitting the foster-based, nonprofit animal advocacy/rescue organization that has been serving the area since 2001. Vickery Meadow
Vickery Meadow Trans.lation kids fashion show — for the second year running, the children of the Vickery Meadow community, 8361 Park Lane, present a fashion show, Saturday from 3-6 p.m. Trans.lation: Vickery Meadow celebrates arts and culture of refugees from more than 130 countries who live in the neighborhood.
Granada
The Big Night at the Granada Theater on Greenville is a bigly fundraiser for Big Thought, which supports a million sorts of educational and creative initiatives in Dallas area schools. Blues singer-songwriter, multi-Grammy-winning Ruthie Foster headlines the benefit, with rising star Matt Tedder as her opening act. Purchase tickets and learn more here. Can’t attend? Friday, April 28, The Hollywood Santa Monica Home Tour kicks off with Auction night, a party at Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland, from 7:30-11 p.m., with live music and one-of-a-kind items for which attendees vie. Tickets run $60-$75 …
… The event continues with a candlelight tour Friday from 6-7, and tours of several homes in the historical district Saturday and Sunday. Weekend tours are $15, and proceeds benefit the neighborhood association.
Chief on the Beat: Dallas Police Department Safety Fair, led by officers from the Central patrol division and Adam Medrano, featuring members of the K9 unit (that’s dogs, y’all). The free family event offers food from In N Out Burger, bounce houses and performances by Woodrow Wilson High School groups, not necessarily in that order. It’s from 10-2 at Samuell Grand Recreation Center.

Saturday at 2 p.m., the Bath House Cultural Center partners with the Texas Musicians Museum for Lake-a-Palooza, an afternoon of live music and activities, including a Texas Musicians memorabilia and art exhibition.
The annual flea market at City View Antique Mall is back, rain or shine (in case of rain, look for the tent). Runs through Sunday at 6830 Walling.
Art in the Park is an outdoor marketplace featuring local and regional visual and culinary gifts, artists and craftspeople. Various children’s activities, live music, and food and dessert trucks offer something for the kiddos and overextended shoppers. Sunday from noon-5 p.m. at Lindsley Park, 7100 Lindsley.
The Belmont Porch Crawl starts at 6 p.m. Hit houses on Belmont and Llano and every street in between (you’ll know the house — the one with the par-TAY happening); each street has a holiday theme from Cinco De Mayo to New Year’s Eve. Last year some 200 people turned out to the inventive Belmont Addition Conservation District event, but word is beginning to spread — expect participation to increase.
