Planter boxes will soon be filled with vegetables and flowers at Woodrow Wilson’s peace garden.
In November 2018, two teachers at the East Dallas high school decided to turn an unused courtyard on school property into a garden where students could study or relax. The garden is well on its way to being completed by the end of the school year.
Visual arts teacher Miranda Korschun said plans include planting plants after spring break, painting the flower boxes and benches in the space and installing recycled material sculptures made by students.
“People are already beginning to go outside and use the space to work when it is nice outside now that it’s been cleaned up and made more functional,” Korschun said in an email. “It’s a beautiful thing to see.”
Students from the Art/Poetry/Gardening Club have helped pull the peace garden together. Any produce from the garden will be donated to the Peace Pantry at Woodrow Wilson, which is open to all students and their families in need.
The East Dallas community has donated hoses, netting, trellises, spaces and posts. Korschun said any help is appreciated. She still has to figure out how to maintain the garden over the school’s summer break.
Korschun also received a $1,000 donation from the Woodrow Wilson Community Foundation to purchase supplies and plants needed to complete the garden.
