Woodrow Wilson’s 2016 District 12-5A champion team.

The Woodrow Wilson’s football team is riding high after demolishing Kimball High School 83-20 in last week’s launch of the state play-offs. But their path to victory still has its hurdles; on Friday, the Wildcats take on Landcaster High School in a game that could be tough to win.

Both teams are matched in their 10-1 records, but a majority of sports writers in Texas have their money on Lancaster taking the win.

Due to his performance against Kimball last Friday, Woodrow Wildcat defensive back Xavier Gipson was honored this week as the Dallas Morning News’ Defensive Player of the Week. “Gipson finished the (Kimball) game with seven tackles, two forced fumbles — one of which he returned 22 yards for a touchdown — a tackle for a loss and two pass break ups,” DMN notes of the Wildcat sophomore. “Gipson also took a punt return 75 yards for a score and returned a kickoff 95 yards to the five-yard line before being brought down.”

The Wildcats will take on Lancaster at the Gopher Warrior Bowl,  250 E Tarrant Raod, Grand Prairie. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students in advance at the school, or $10 at the gate. But come early to share in the Wildcat pride with performances from band, the Sweethearts, ROTC and other student groups.
