Their performance led the Wildcats to a third-place effort in the meet, the first time this year the team has finished in the top 10. The second team of Judd Webb, Tom Rundell, Peter Morrissey and Ryan Huber ran in the junior varsity meet, and placed sixth out of 102 teams 34:45.

The Wildcat girls were sixth on the strength of performances by Erin Murray, Ramona Badillo, Ashley Cromeens and Jamie Beach. Murray, a junior, led the squad and cut nearly a minute off her sophomore best.

“The boys have been running extremely well so far,” says coach Steve Wulf. “Our depth is one of our strong points, and this should be one of our strongest teams ever. The girls are very young, but are improving all the time.”

Key meets coming up include the Lake Highlands Invitational this month.

VOLLEYBALL UPDATE: The Woodrow volleyball team has posted a 3-4 record under coach Jim Harris. Several of those losses have come to some of the strongest teams in the state, including Justin Northwest, Red Oak and Lancaster. Leslie Barnes, Keri Andreason and Mavis Webb have given Harris reason for optimism. “Some of those teams we lost to have girls who play year-around. My girls play hard, but we don’t have a lot of club players. That will make it all the more sweet when we beat some of those teams later in the season.”

TENNIS BEGINS: Coach Gayla Colllinsworth welcomes a large group of tennis players to her fall team tennis program. Nearly 30 athletes are vying for spots. District champion Beth Knox is back to lead the girls, along with Molly Briner, Kinome Proctor, Rene Smith, Kara Pendergrass, Gonca Alban and Emily Rainwater. For the boys, Travis Ewart, Andrew George, Zack Redington and Trey Pendergrass are expected to volley for position in the fall schedule.
