Carlin Morris began serving with the Wilkinson Center over 40 years ago. It was during one of their events that she noticed several students wearing old shoes that had holes or tattered soles.

This inspired her to work with the Wilkinson Center to start the shoe drive in 1986. She retired as chair of the drive in 2019. To date, the drive has helped over 40,000 children begin their school year with new shoes and socks.

“Without a good pair of shoes, kids feel embarrassed, discouraged, or left out simply because they lack something most of us take for granted,” said Nancy Fomby in a statement. “Proper shoes let kids run free at recess, participate in sports, engage with their peers shame-free.”
