You’ve heard the saying: “You’re not getting older, you’re getting better.” Well, we all know that’s not always the case. But how do you know when your four-legged friend is getting on in years? Aging is such a gradual process, you may not notice that your pet is not as active, tires more easily and naps a lot. He also may be getting gray around the muzzle and a little stubborn.

When is a dog “old”? The answer varies by breed. Larger dogs are old at eight or nine, while toys and terriers live longer than most. Of course, care, nutrition and genetic makeup add to the aging process.

At about 10 years old, most dogs are considered “senior citizens” and require extra care and attention. Regular veterinarian visits are the best investment in your dog’s health.

Also important are a balanced diet (consult your vet for foods formulated for the older pet), fresh water, weight control, exercise in moderation, regular grooming, patience and love.

Just because your dog is getting older is no reason to ignore him. He needs gentle play time, regular walks and TLC to make his “golden years” pleasant and rewarding.

HOLIDAY DINING FOR PETS:

Although your dog may beg for a bite of turkey and dressing, it’s best not to give in. Rich foods, particularly those high in fat, can cause gastrointestinal problems. And don’t forget that poultry bones are dangerous. The sharp bones can splinter and lodge in your pet’s throat.
