Welcome to October, here’s a few of things to keep in mind when you’re planning your weekend:
- Walton’s Garden Center is hosting a pumpkin carving contest this weekend on Oct. 5. Bring in your best carved pumpkin to be judged. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m., and judging starts at 11 a.m. First place will win a $100 Walton’s gift card, second place a $50 gift card, and third place a $25 gift card. Must be present to win. - This Friday, Oct. 4, is Silver Screen Serenade: A Night of Award Winning Music, an elegant buffet dinner with wine and silent auction benefiting St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts, a new center for arts and culture in East Dallas, starting at 6:30 p.m. Music from award-winning movies performed by the fabulous singers of the Cathedral Choir and their friends. The event will be in the Great Hall, single tickets are $35, couple $60, and a table of eight for $250.
- Also, while you’re there, St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts is also hosting a free exhibition, which is running through Oct. 13. Photographer Carolyn Brown and writer/illustrator Richard Perry, both longtime observers of Mexico’s art and folk customs, have combined their talents for this photographic exhibition. The exhibit is at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in the Great Hall Gallery, 5100 Ross, 214.887.6552, free.
- This weekend, from Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 3-5, is the second annual One-Act Play Festival by the Latino Cultural Center, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night. The theatrical performances not only seek to portray the Latino experience in North Texas, but also to challenge the definition of Latino identity in the region. - Also, don’t forget the Dallas Arboretum is hosting Concerts at the Arboretum through the month of October, ending Oct. 31. Every Thursday night, the Dallas Arboretum hosts a different band on the Martin Rutchik Concert Stage and Lawn. Bring your family and friends and your favorite food and drinks, and enjoy a concert overlooking White Rock Lake. - Lipscomb Elementary is hosting its Blacktop & Blues Food Truck rally this weekend, Friday, Oct. 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be live music and DFW Food Trucks. Admission is $3 a person. All proceeds go to the Lipscomb scholarship fund. The location is 5801 Worth.
- And who says the fun has to end when the weekend’s over? For the Love of the Lake is hosting a Date Night at Lake House White Rock Bar and Grill on Tuesday from 5 p.m.-8 p.m., so if you need a relaxing dinner on your way home Tuesday evening, stop by and support Lake House and For the Love of the Lake.
