Neighborhood resident Michelle Kitto wants to bring people together through sewing. Her new business, Urban Spools, offers sewing classes and a place to “sew-cialize,” as Kitto puts it.

“We think we’ve created a fun, exciting place to come and learn,” she says.

Urban Spools opened recently in the Lake Highlands Village shopping center, at 718 N. Buckner. A basic sewing class costs $105, and students learn to make a tunic. There is also a $65 class where students learn to make a clutch handbag. A beginning quilting class costs $150.

Once a month, the “Friday night stitching club” allows sewers to pay $10 to use the shop’s sewing machines, have snacks and BYOB.
