A preliminary investigation determined that on Tuesday, Jan. 7, around 3:15 p.m., the Dallas Police Department (DPD) received six 911 calls regarding a suspect pointing a gun at vehicles driving by on Joaquin Drive.
Witnesses described the suspect as a man wearing a red hoodie and grey sweatpants. He was later identified as 52-year-old Michael Alonzo.
Officers Juan Lopez-Navarro and Nathaniel Cairns arrived around 3:21 p.m. and observed Alonzo, wearing a red hoodie and grey sweatpants, standing in the street in the 11000 block of Joaquin Drive.
The officers observed Alonzo pointing a handgun at an individual inside a vehicle that was pulling over. The officers gave Alonzo verbal commands in both English and Spanish — which he ignored.
After additional verbal commands, Officer Cairns stated that Alonzo was “pointing” the gun, according to Officer Cairns body camera footage. Both officers then discharged their firearms, striking Alonzo, and then provided him first aid until Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived.
Alonzo was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he remains stable, but in critical condition.
Alonzo’s weapon was recovered from the scene and was later determined to be a replica firearm — a Crosman revolver CO2 air pistol. He will be charged with three counts of deadly conduct. Additional charges may follow.
His criminal history includes arrests for prostitution and theft by check.
