Throughout the year, schools earn points for holding in-house inspections, safety trainings, practicing emergency protocols and passing out safety materials. At the end of the year, the campus with the most points receives the Eagle Safety Award and is named Dallas ISD’s Safest School.

For the 2021-22 school year, 21 schools including Mata and Reinhardt were given a plaque and an incentive award ($1,500 for the first-place winner and $1,000 for the rest). They were also invited to a celebration at Dallas ISD’s administrative building.

The school that came in first place was John F. Peeler Elementary in Oak Cliff.

School safety is on the minds of many neighbors, especially following the Uvalde school shooting.

Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde gave a safety update in early August, highlighting that the 2020 bond has allowed the district to invest around $100 million in school safety measures. One step the district took to try to increase safety at campuses was implementing a clear- or mesh-backpack requirement for middle- and high-school students.
